SCAD Museum of Art

In my SCAD graduate program, a community design class transformed my approach to visitor engagement. We developed an innovative mobile app for SCAD MOA, integrating geotracking, beacons, and AR to enhance usability and wayfinding. Shifting from a website-centric model, we created a dynamic mobile experience that deepened visitor connections to the museum's art and exhibitions.

Strategy Research

Our research team thoroughly analyzed the competition landscape and collected insights from over 150 user surveys to refine our project's direction. One-on-one interviews with users played a pivotal role in understanding their unique journeys and addressing specific pain points, shaping a solution tailored to their needs.

Statement of Opportunity

OPPOETUNITY

At SCAD MOA, a vital communication system is needed for all users, utilizing technology to captivate today's museum visitors and encourage their active participation.

Information Architecture

Features

GEOTRACKING & IBEACONS

The design process strategically integrated mobile technologies: geotracking for real-time location info, beacons for indoor navigation, and AR for immersive, context-aware experiences—enhancing users' understanding of the museum's layout and artworks.

WAYFINDING

The design focused on enhancing usability and wayfinding. The mobile app featured an intuitive interface, allowing visitors to navigate exhibits, access artwork details, and enrich their museum experience. User-centric principles ensured a seamless, engaging interaction.

SELF GUIDED TOURS

To enhance interactivity, we transitioned SCAD MOA from a website-centric approach to a mobile app, bringing the museum's offerings directly to visitors. This shift aimed to foster a deeper connection with the art and exhibitions.

INTERACTIVE RESOURCES

The museum hosts guest lectures from esteemed artists and designers, but access via library DVDs limits student participation. We proposed hosting the recordings in the app for broader access.

Branding

We proposed new branding for the SCAD Museum of Art, they had a few different logo variations that they were using interchangeably so we proposed a new standard.

Conclusion

Designing a mobile app for SCAD MOA was a transformative endeavor within my graduate program at SCAD. By embracing mobile technologies such as geotracking, beacons, and augmented reality, our team aimed to propel the museum into a new era of visitor engagement. This project reflects my commitment to pushing boundaries in UX design and leveraging technology to create meaningful and immersive user experiences in cultural and educational spaces.
